Meet Peter
on May 20, 2009Peter Jilowa has been the doorman at The Royal Livingstone for a few years now. He makes sure that our guests are well taken care of when they arrive at the hotel. But Peter was not always a doorman. He came to work at Sun International as a driver. It was soon seen that Peter had a winning smile and a charming way with the guests. After a short trial as the doorman, Peter was promoted to this position and has worked there for the past five years.
Peter’s life has not been easy. He was born in north-western Zambia. His father was a teacher. One day, as Peter’s father was in front of his class of children, a storm was raging outside. A lightening strike hit the classroom, killing Peter’s father and two of the school children. This was a devastating blow to Peter and his family.
Peter was sent to Livingstone to be in the care of an uncle and here he continued his schooling. He also spent time with another uncle in the Copperbelt. On finishing school, of which he attended several as he was passed from one uncle to another, he has had a variety of jobs. Eventually he got a job at a small local hotel where he found his vocation. His expertise, of course, is his amazing talent with people.
Peter loves his job and its million thrills. He gets to meet all our celebrities as they arrive at the hotel. He has met princes and princesses. He has met presidents and film stars. He met Arnold Schwarzenegger a few years ago. He says it is a great job to be in and he always has stories to tell his children when he gets home in the evening.
